A Transformational Approach Applied to Outage Management of Nuclear Power Plants

We report on a successful pr oject for transference of advanced planning and sche duling technology for out age management a collab orationbetween R omeL ab oratory the Electrical Power R esear ch Institute Ka man Science and Kestrel Institute as part of DOD s dual use program The main goal of the project was to evaluate the use of transformational approaches and AI te chnology to solve real world planning and schedul ing problems involving complex constraints ROMAN Rome Lab Outage Manager is the prototyp esystem that was developed as a result of this project RO MAN s main innovation compared to the current state of the art of outage management tools is its inte grated appr oach to outage management automatically enforc ing safety constraints during the planning and schedul ing phase A nother innovative asp ect of ROMAN is its gener ationof more robust sche dules that are feasi ble over time windows In other words R OMAN gen erates a family of schedules by assigning time inter vals as start times to activities rather than single point start times without a ecting the overall dur ation of the project
